The Canadian Music Educators’ Association/L’Association canadienne des musiciens éducateurs (CMEA/ACME) seeks applicants for the position of Editor for the Association’s journal, Canadian Music Educator/Musiciens Éducateurs au Canada (CME). Potential applicants should note that this is a volunteer position. Applications from individuals who would like to serve as Co-Editors will also be considered.
Deadline: July 31, 2025, or until an Editor is named. This timeline will allow for a new Editor to be mentored alongside of the current Editor for one or two issues before taking on the position independently. The term of the appointment is four years or 16 publications and begins April 30, 2026. An Editor may apply for re-appointment for a further term.
CME, the official voice of the CMEA/ACME, is published quarterly in both print and electronic formats. A hybrid practitioner/peer-reviewed professional journal, CME publishes articles on a broad spectrum of topics, including research reports, successful teaching strategies, general practices, and current issues in music education. Qualifications and Requirements
Requirements for the position include the following:
- a record of experience in music education scholarship and practice;
- a record of publications and editorial experience;
- administrative skills to oversee the publication cycle and meet deadlines;
- ability to lead a volunteer team of guest editors and contributors to produce a high quality, professional journal;
- ability to work effectively with publishing professionals; and
- fluency in both English and French is an asset.
Major Responsibilities
The journal Editor oversees all matters pertaining to the publishing of the CME, including:
- collaborating with the Publications Advisory Committee (PAC) and Board to provide clear vision, ensure fiscal operations, and plan for the future of the journal;
- soliciting articles on key themes, issues, and other relevant topics;
- establishing a reliable group of expert reviewers for peer reviewed submissions and managing the peer review process;
- ensuring the timely processing of manuscripts, including constructive feedback to authors;
- soliciting reviews on books and multi-media resources;
- collaborating effectively and in a timely way with the journal translator;
- writing engaging editorials;
- copy-editing and formatting all materials submitted for publication;
- collaborating with the layout design manager, advertising manager, print shop, and electronic publisher to ensure the journal projects a professional image;
- ensuring that publication deadlines are met;
- working with the Communications Director to arrange dissemination of the journal to membership and sharing completed journals with database administrators (e.g., Proquest); and
- providing a written annual report to the CMEA/ACME Board.
Applications should include:
- Cover letter. This letter should include an expression of interest in the position, highlighting background relevant to the position, and a brief statement that outlines your vision and possible goals and/or directions for the journal. This statement may include an assessment of current strengths and/or weaknesses you perceive in the existing journal and suggestions regarding possible strategies for addressing the issues.
- Curriculum vitae. The vitae should include a complete list of your publications and editorial experience and identify areas of interest and expertise in music education.
- Statement of institutional support. This position is a significant responsibility. It is important that potential candidates consider and assess the feasibility of serving as Editor considering resources and supports available. CMEA/ACME does not provide for salary, office space, or release time, but provides some financial support for office resources. This support may include clerical assistance, office supplies, postage, and software. Support offered by institutions varies widely (e.g. release time, office support, recognition for service in performance reviews); therefore, potential candidates should discuss these aspects with relevant authorities at their places of employment to ensure the feasibility of the application. A brief statement describing the level to which institutional support is available should be included. If the applicant is not employed where institutional support is possible, a statement regarding how the position will be manageable should be included.
