CALL FOR PROPOSALS
7th International Conference on Narrative Inquiry in Music Education (NIME7)
Focusing on the theme of Trauma, Resilience, and (Re)Engagement in Music Education, we are delighted to invite scholars of music, arts, and education fields to participate in the 7th International Conference on Narrative Inquiry in Music Education (NIME7), to be held October 15–17, 2020, in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada, at Brock University, St. Catharines. This conference will be co-hosted by Brock University, Faculty of Education, and the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music.
There is an urgency to academically and artistically confront the traumatic violence in a world where bigotry, racial supremacy, gender(ed) violence, neo-fascism, and nativism have become a normative discourse. As conference co-chairs (Dr. Shelley Griffin & Dr. Nasim Niknafs), we felt it necessary, and even imperative, to continue the conversation already begun by music education scholars (e.g., Bradley, in press; Hess & Bradley, under review) to address the ways in which music, education, and the arts provide a platform for resilience (Dolloff, 2019) and (re)engagement with these vital topics. In addition, it is of utmost necessity to attend to the impact of the climate crisis and economic instability created by large conglomerates. Building upon the significant NIME body of literature established by Barrett and Stauffer (2009; 2012), NIME7 follows these theoretical and methodological underpinnings by delving into the physical, psychological, philosophical, sociological, and political aspects, as they relate to the reciprocal influences of trauma on musical practices and education.

Submission Guidelines – Deadline: March 15, 2020
Considering narrative inquiry as both phenomenon and method, and a holistic approach to engaging with storying and restorying, we invite scholars to contemplate ways to represent narrative scholarship beyond the printed page, such as music, film, photography, and performative pieces.
• Word format submissions should include two parts: 1) cover-page information with name, contact information, email address, and a 250-word professional bio; 2) abstract of maximum 800 words (excluding references), indicating a preference for one of the following three modes of presentation:
o Paper Session: Paper presentation of 25 minutes, followed by chaired discussion.
o Panel Session: Three related papers by different authors addressing a single topic or
theme scheduled in one 90-minute session and hosted by a chair.
o Narrative Gallery: A forum for dialogue about ongoing inquiry or works-in-progress.
Conference participants are asked to interact with gallery presenters during the forum.
Note: Graduate students are highly encouraged to submit their completed or works-in-progress in any of the three modes listed above.
