In 1997 CMEA/ACME took the lead in proposing and organizing a National Symposium on Arts Education. Its purpose was to assemble leaders in the arts representing associations (provincial and national), arts service organizations, arts advocacy groups, education associations, provincial arts councils, school district administrators, representatives from teacher training institutions, artists, government agencies, writers and researchers in education to hear and discuss current research and views on such topics as:
- arts curricula
- partnerships with organizations, agencies and institutions
- partnerships with teachers , artists and scholars
- ‘de-skilling’ of the arts through the use of generalist teachers
- teachers as professional artists
- teacher training in arts education
- developing specific recommendations for improving arts education in Canadian schools
