ANNOUNCING THE 2012 PAT SHAND NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION

Long time educator, researcher, and advocate for Canadian Music in Education, Dr. Patricia Shand, has graciously agreed to sponsor a NEW national essay competition. This competition is aimed at practitioners in the field, college and university professors, and researchers.

Patricia Shand Prize for Essays on Canadian Music in Education

Topic: Essays may be on any aspect of Canadian music in education.

Style: Essays are accepted in either English or French. Essays must be typed, double spaced, and conform to standard APA 6th edition style. Essay word limit: 5000 words. All charts, diagrams, and photos must be supplied camera-ready.

Eligibility: This essay competition is open to teachers at all levels—elementary, secondary, higher education—and researchers. Submissions must not have been previously published. Entrants may submit only one essay.

Jury: Essays will be assessed by nationally recognized scholars in the field of music education who will be selected after the entries have been received to avoid conflicts. Jurors will be announced with the results of the competition.

Submissions: Submissions must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2012. Late submissions will not be accepted.  In order to facilitate a blind review process, contestants are required to include two components in one electronic submission (rich text format).

1. A separate cover sheet including the name of the author, institutional affiliation, permanent home addres, and email address.

2. A file containing a 100-150 word abstract and the Essay.

No identifying content within the body of the text is allowed with respect to either author of institution.Winning essays may be published in The Canadian Music Educator. First prize winner will receive a cash award.

CMEA Mourns Loss of Exemplary Music Educator

Anne Lowe, 63, of Résidence Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Coeur, Dieppe, NB and formerly of Moncton, passed away on Monday, March 5th, 2012.

Born in Moncton, NB, she was the daughter of the late Osborne and the late Alfreda (née: Lavoie) Lowe.

Anne devoted her entire career to music education, holding music degrees from the Université de Moncton, University of Western Ontario and a Doctoral degree in Education and Music Education from the University of Illinois. She taught music privately and in public schools in Dieppe, Moncton and Fredericton, New Brunswick, Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario. She adjudicated in numerous music festivals throughout the Maritime provinces and was published in the areas of music education and the integration of the arts in the language arts curriculum. She presented her research at National and International conferences.

Anne had been a professor at the Université de Moncton since 1990 teaching courses in Music education methods and Integrated learning. She served as associate Dean and subsequently Dean of the Faculty of Education from 2000 to 2007.

She will be missed by her dear friend, John Grashel and three sisters: Sylvia (John) Cormier of Fredericton, Margaret (Roland) Richard of Moncton and Nancy (Thane) Mallory of Hatfield Pt., NB as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from the Chartersville Funeral Home, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, NB (857-1901) on Friday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm.

Funeral service will be celebrated from Notre-Dame-d’Acadie Chapel (U. de M.), on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at 11 am.

Interment in Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire Cemetery, Dieppe, NB.

Donations for Brain Tumor Research or to Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Coeur Missions in Haiti would be appreciated by the family.
